Information about Schneider Electric
Schneider Electric is a large, worldwide company of French origin. Its origin goes back to 1836, when two brothers, Joseph and Adolphe Schneider took over a troubled foundry at Le Creusot and went into armaments, but it wasn't until 1891 that they decided to exploit the new electricity market.
In the first part of the 20th century, Schneider associated itself with Westinghouse Systems who were, by then, a major international electrical group. The group started manufacturing electric motors and locomotives. After the Second World War, the armaments specialism was abandoned in favour of the electrical construction, iron and steel works. The company remained in this sector until the early 1980s.
In 1981, Groupe Schneider separated from the other activities to focus on the electrical and controls industry. From here, the company went into strategic aquisitions of Telemecanique in 1988, SquareD in 1991 and Merlin Gerin in 1992 and it is these brands that are the core products of the company's offering.
In 1999, Groupe Schneider was renamed to Schneider Electric, in order to give it more identity. Also in this year, the Lexel group was acquired.
From 2000 onwards, the company has grown, again through strategic aquisitions, into a world leader in Power and Control solutions and has acquired many smaller organisations into the group, namely Power Measurement, MGE UPS Systems, Clipsal, TAC, and Andover Controls.
